I recently installed network cards and a cat5 crossover cable between my 2 computers, and am unable to get communications. one shows ip address 169.254.64.25 and the other shows 192.168.0.2 , how do I get these machines to recognise each other

They need to be on the same subnet.

Decide what you want the IP's to be. Then change the IP's in each so that the first three octets are the same in both computers and the last number is different by at least one. Then change the subnet line. Restart both machines after the changes. Below is an example:

Computer 1

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Computer2

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

we have tried setting the ip numbers as stated in the manual for the cards, at one stage one computer could see the other but not access it. Since relocating one of the systen units and rerouting the cable under the desk instead of on top, all we seem to get is flickering from the cards indicater lights when the cable is connected and both units operating....... but they dont show up on network or ping the other in msdos.

Josh - you said subnet should be the same - well I tried that and it was not working - I have a LAN at work place - and here is how it went :

my IP was - *.*.160.6
and other WS's IP was - *.*.169.16

both PCs were part of the same domain - with a same subnet mask/dns & gateway - but I could not access the other WS - so I had to change my IP class similar to the other WS in order to communicate otherwise I was getting "network path not found" - which I do not understand -

can you plz explain ? thanx - I am using Windows 2000 Pro -

I think you must use IP address CLASS C, If so, try set the head IP are same, but the last are different ,such as your IP *.*.*.6
and other WS's IP was - *.*.*.1
