These are the emails that I have sent to a guy I know that normally helps me with these things but he is not about at the moment, so I was hoping that you could maybe help a little. The background is that I am setting up a WIN2KSBS server and have been trying to get the routing and remote access setup so I can VPN to it, we also have a professionally setup server at work which I can look at and compare to. My experiance level is very little, I have been trying to put the network together for about 3 months now when I get chance, most of it seems OK after some perserverance but this is baffling me a little.
Have been trying to get this RRAS thing set up for about 5/6 hours now with no joy at all!! Had run the wizard a while ago when I first installed the server and it was setup so it looked like the works one. When comparing the two the only difference was that if you look under IP Routing -> General the 'Internal' interface has an IP address 'Not Available' so isnt working properly, this is also shown in the DHCP relay Agent and the IGMP. So I have tried shutting it down and running the wizard under almost every configuration possible, running the network thing in ISA to allow the traffic etc and none of it has given me a Internal interface that is OK. I have checked in DHCP and the leases have been assigned and stuff and have also looked on the net for some help but cant find any. As far as I can tell you cant manually adjust the internal values. This leaves me thinking I have set something else up wrong along the way somewhere - not entirely sure what. Pretty baffled really as whilst been a total novice and learning as I go so plenty of room for errors, as far as I can tell it does all seem to run along fairly happily so far. Have checked everything I can think of and all the tutorials seem to suggest it should be relatively straight forward but the Internal interface does not seem to want to pick up any of the IP address that DHCP has set aside for it. Also DHCP seems to have lots of other things set aside for something..... maybe caused by me doing a reconcile or something?? Also how do you 'hide' the scheduled tasks folders on servers/XP machines so they dont appear as a share??
........... and then
Spent a bit more time on the RRAS problem I'm having last night and had a look at a few things in more detail. When comparing the IP routing tables between my server and the work server it appears that there is some stuff missing in mine which I am guessing is causing me the problems, like the one on the work server which assigns the internal value to the loopback value..... . I have had a little bit of a read up on routing tables etc with a view to finding out whether I'm supposed to add values to them manually?? I suspect that I should not have to add values to get my RRAS working as its doesnt seem to be mentioned anywhere. I am gonna have a look at the tables in more detail tonight - should I be expecting to have to manually add the values or should they have been added automatically along the way??
Hope I didn't bore ya
