When you have a hub, you use straight through
When you use 2 pcs only with no hub, you use a crossover.

Noramlly, crossover is for testing purpose. or for 2 pcs only.

A computer, which has an RJ-45 port, is a "talker".

A hub or router, which has an RJ-45X port is a "listener".

If you hook a talker to a listener you use a straight-through wire.

If you hook a talker to a talker or hook a listener to a listener you need a cross-over cable.

The "uplink" port on a router is an RJ-45 "talker" port, so it is designed to be connected to another router or hub listener port.

So, to sum it up, if you connect a computer to a router or hub, you use a straight-through. If you connect a computer to another computer you use a cross-over. If you connect a router or hub to another router or hub you use a crossover, unless you use one of the "uplink" ports, in which case you use a straight-through.
