Every time you open Excel, there is a list on the bottom of the file menu containing names and links to the last four excell documents opened. This is easily remedied.
1. Work your way to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\office\(your current version)\Excel\Recentfiles
2. Delete all "file" values.
You will never see recent files listed on the bottom of the Excel file menu again.
Does anyone know a similar tweek for word? I have only found temporary fixex, but nothing permanent.

I am looking at Office 97 at the moment but I believe it is the same for Office XP.

In Word or Excel go to Tools, Options, General tab and remove the tick next to 'Recently used file list' and it will no longer list the MRUs in the File menu.

No need to go into the registry.

Yep, OfficeXP/Word 2002 is the same.

Thank you. The answer was so simple and as usual I over-did it.
