If you are on a single home computer, then there is no advantage to having it that I can think of. In fact, I can imagine it being a disadvantage.

If you are on a networked system where this system may need to be administered remotely, then this share should stay in place for the use of the admins.

Local Network: might be useful if something happened to your comp, you could access your hard disk and fix it.
Internet Connection: if anything, it'd be a tool for hackers to gain access to your comp (which can be prevented with Zonealarm

No, it is not required for the LAN or internet connection to work correctly. It is simply a hidden share by which you can administer the computer remotely if you need to.

If it is a stand alone computer, no LAN, then there is no need in having it and it only serves as a possible entry point for a hacker.

If you don't care anything about having to get into the computer from another machine if you have a problem, then there is not need in it.

It is simply a convenience, and one you can do without if you so decide. But it is an invaluable tool in a LAN environment.
