Hey guys (and gals),

I have a small problem with setting up a network connection between just two pc's, both running win xp pro.

the purpose of this is to allow both machines to use my cable modem internet connection, and possibly also to allow one machine to pull files off the other.

I have set up a simple chain:
cable modem --(usb)--> machine1 --(lan)--> machine 2.

the cable modem provides machine 1 with a static IP address that is visible to the outsidde world. and it works.

machine 2 recognises it's net card and can ping itself on the specified IP no. (192.168.0.2).

however, when I enable the net card on machine 1, I am unable to use the internet, which I can kind of understand, since I figure the machine can't work out how to route the packets.

the odd thing is that in this state, machine 1 is able to ping machine 2, but machine 2 cannot ping machine 1.
Also, browsing the network in explorer half works on machine 2 (ie, it can see that machine 1 exists, and it can see it's own shares), but machine 1 cannot see either machine in explorer.

I guess this is an issue with effectively running two network adaptors in machine 1.

Is there a way to make this work ?
Is there a way to make this work without purchasing any extra hardware ?

There are a few other odd things that I've noticed when shuffling the cables around today, but they are not relevant to how I want these computers set up.

Please help,

TIA,

Doug.

ok...
i have got as far as sharing the internet connection.
all i had to do was switch the order of the machines ('cos the problem i think is with machine 1).
so I now have:
cable modem ---(usb)---> machine 2 (now 192.168.0.1) ----(lan)---> machine 1 (now 192.168.0.2)

however, windows file sharing is still not working, and machine 1 still cannot be pinged either by itself or machine 2.

any ideas ?
thanks,

Doug.

oh it's ok.. i fixed it.

it turns out that my firewall was being too strict, and even denying an echo (ping) request.

now i'm off to the linux forums to sort out these computers' other personalities..
