Please help me in resolving thi network problem

Hello,
General suggestions are to make sure that the two machines are using the same domain. Also make sure that on the Windows 98 machine that you actually Log in.
Of course make sure that you have folders shared on both.
Question. Do you see either machine when in the Network Neighbourhood?

Correction, they don't need to be in same domain. But they need to be in same subnet mask
if you are able to ping to it, that means they are talking. You may want to check security settings, file-shares.

Actually I doubt you are in a domain, probably peer to peer, workgroup. If you right click on my computer and go to properties, you can set the workgroup under network identification. They don't have to be in the same workgroup but it helps things if they are. What I do is synchronize the accounts on both machines. Duplicate the username and password for all the users on both machines. Then create shares and set the permissions. You need client for microsoft networks and file and print sharing installed and bound to your network protocol. Also set your logon for the 98 box to client for microsoft networks, not windows logon or family logon. If you open a command window you can then run winipcfg /all (98) or ipconfg /all (2k) to see your IP addy etc.
One final tip, I found this here at winguides.

Speed-up Browsing Remote Computers (Windows 2000/XP) Popular
This tweak can be easily applied using WinGuides Tweak Manager. Download Now!
When you browse a Windows 95, 98 or Me machine from a Windows 2000 or XP computer
extra time is taken to determine if any scheduled tasks or printers are enabled on the destination computer.
Open your registry and find the key below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
To disable checking for scheduled tasks delete the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} sub-key.
To disable checking for printers delete the {2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} sub-key.
The change should take effect immediately.
Other wise you end up waiting 5 or 10 minuits for the 98 box to show up in net neighborhood.
