for some reason the My Documents folder is still on the start menu of one of my computers. i checked the registry and sure enough HK_CU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\ex plorer\ has dword value NoSMMyDocs=1
not sure why it still shows up...although it doesn't show on the desktop which is good

HJ, can you post your solution for the benefit of anyone else with a future problem?

sure.
changes to folders that are automatically on the start menu (like help,my docs, run, etc...) usually take effect as soon as you hit f5. but after you've disabled right-click options on the start menu (by renaming/deleting HK_ROOT/folder and HK_ROOT/directory) you have to reboot your system first. after rebooting i wanted to know why the change suddenly took effect, so i ran a system process trace and found that there's an idle check when f5 is pressed (or any other process that refreshes the desktop) that calls to HK_ROOT/folder and HK_ROOT/directory.
