still working on this if anyone has any answers:
the hosts file is at C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc as it has always been
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath=%SystemRoot%\Syst em32\drivers\etc
which should be correct as well
host file looks like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.friendster.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 www.companion.yahoo.com
yet i can goto any of these sites no problem...
yes, i have lmhosts enabled
yes, i have tried 127.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1

are you sure you modifie the hosts file sometimes you have hosts.sam
possible you don't see the extension
deselect in folder option
hide extensions for known files types

Just a stab here:
In IE go to tools > internet options > connections > Lan settings > make sure everything is UN-checked there.
Restart IE to test.

Get File Monitor from www.sysinternals.com. Start it and set filter to show all read requests to "hosts*". if you now use ping command to www.friendster.com, File Monitor should log that ping command reads hosts file. If you don't get any hits, there is something wrong. You could then remove filter and log all file access to see if the hosts data is read from different file. If it seems that no hosts file is accesses, use Registry Monitor from www.sysinternals.com to track if there is some registry settings active preventing using hosts file. You might need to log windows boot with Registry Monitor to get all related registry access, because some settings are read only on boot.
If all that doesn't help, take big sledgehammer and show your computer who is the boss.
