I am having difficulties with streaming video on Windows Media Player 7 on Windows 98 on a Pentium IV computer. The play begins but after a short while the buffer seems to fail, and my modem becomes "jammed" and emits a ticking sound. This requires me not just to reboot Windows but to shut down the computer entirely, in order to clear the jammed modem.

I have configured the speed on the Media Player in every possible way, from the 785 kbs speed of my ADSL line to the lowest kbs setting possible, and nothing helps. I have also changed the buffer time, but that has not solved the problem either.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have a suggestion of how to approach it?

I'd suggest updating your WMP.

I had MWP 9 on my computer but uninstalled it and installed 7 instead because the problem existed on the 9. It now exists on the 7 as well.

Any other ideas?

This sounds like a problem with modem not the player. Stream packets require continuous use and may putting pressure on an ailing modem. Try realplayer and quicktime streams if they show the same problem, it is probably the modem. Check for viruses also.
