By default, Outlook Express uses the file called "notify.wav" to let you know when you have new email. The default sound for the new email notification can be changed. This Should work both in Windows 95 And 98.
First go into outlook express and make sure that "Play Sound When New Messages Arrive" is checked, then Close Outlook Express.
Open your registry and find the key below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\ MailBeep
open the subkey .Current (with the dot) if it's not there create it (EX. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\ MailBeep\.Current )
Modify the Default string value by typing in the path and file name of the sound you want to use.
For Example: if you want to use "ding.wav" , change the default setting to C:\WINDOWS\Media\ding.wav
then from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\ MailBeep go to the other sub key called .Default ( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\ MailBeep\.Default ) if it's not there, create it. Modify the Default string by typing in the same path and file name as in the previous step (i.e. C:\WINDOWS\Media\ding.wav ) Then close Regedit. Next time you receive new mail in Outlook Express, you should hear your chosen Sound.
