I'm running Windows 98SE.
I use Notepad quite often.
"Save As" always defaults to "My Documents" on drive C.
I would like to change this to another folder on drive D.
Where does Notepad get its stupid default from?

Stupid??? Attitude?? Defaults are just that, a method of operation. That's what programming is all about, making things work in a standardized fashion. Most can be changed/customized by a reasonable person. If Windows is not liked, there's other Operating Systems. A 'custom' OS can be created but will it work with the world/other OS's??

Thanks. Am aware that most programs like Notepad can be trained. Unfortunately, after a routine power down and back up, all such training is forgotten. Perhaps I am stupid. Perhaps I have also been programming computers for over 40 years. Perhaps I have done it on many, many operating systems in many, many languages. What I want to know is, where does Windows 98 store defaults such as C:\My Documents? What I want to do is permanently modify that construct, thus burn into its itty-bitty memory the default that I want to use so that I don't have to keep training it.

I see. Well, I'd guess that most all programmers [and a large bunch of novices, intermediates, and advanced users] understand, or had better understand for their own computing safety/use, that Windows runs on that 'Holy Grail' called the Registry. All things default are contained either there or hard-coded into Windows. Maybe a good search of the Registry will give up some of the defaults. But then maybe something so simple as changing the Start In: box in the properties of the icon could work, but then not being a formally trained programmer, I won't be able to guarantee that.
