Hi,
I'm trying to set up a home network with a W2K Pro machine and several W98 SE machines using Wireless adapters and router and I've hit a few "Walls"...

Here's one of the many "Walls"...

Here's some history:
A long time ago, I found (on this site) and implemented a reg tweak; "MustBeValidated" I installed this tweak in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon' with a value of "1" on my sons Pc (W98 SE w/MS Family Logon). This prevented his friends from creating UNAUTHORIZED profiles on his machine as well as him because he typed his name wrong...Great!

Now that I'm using (trying to use...) his Pc on my network I had to disable this tweak, which I did, so I wouldn't get locked out during setup and experimentation in case I didn't get to the network, and I changed the signon to Client for MS Networks.

Some setup info...
I have a cable modem connected to my Wireless Router (AP)...
The router is wired to the W2K machine...
His Pc (W98) is on the first floor on the other side of the house...
My Pc (W2K) is in the basement and once I get this and many other issues resolved, I will attempt to add the wifes Pc (W98) to it all which is on the third floor.
I ensured that the W98 is NOT looking to logon to a NT Network Domain in configuration...
There is no doubt about accessing the router since we all have internet access...

Here's the problem:
As you all know, Windows 98 could care less about your password and this was a problem which is why I had the tweak on his Pc. On the W2K machine, I created profiles with dir paths and during signon, W98 was ignoring them which meant that I was not getting to the network and thus no policies were being applied as well as paths to user folders.

I was instructed to setup Netbui and File and print Sharing, which I did but as soon as I did this, I was locked out on the W98... It seems that when I installed NetBui, it changed the Logon dialog box to include a Domain, (and the domain it was displaying was my WorkGroup name!!!) and when I try to use my password, I get the message that my password could not be validated by the Network! Remember now, I disabled the "Validation" tweak long before I got to this stage. Pressing cancel just gives me the same error message.

One other thing, in the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Access\Admin\Remote" there is a Binary entry "(My workgroup name)\Domain Admins" with a value of "ff 00"

Now...
1- What the heck does this key mean and does it have anything to do with my problem?
2- Since I do not have a Domain, but a WorkGroup, why is it requiring one?
3- What has NetBui changed that now I get this different version of the Client for MS Networks logon that wants a domain name?

I really need some good advise here as I'm nearing my wits end. Everyone told me that setting up a home network would be easy but it's not and every time I turn around I'm hitting another wall.
Please help me understand what is going on here and how to correct it.
Thanks in advance....
