Slow Network (W98)

I have put my pc and the kids pc both on win 98, but the speed of the network is crap, I had both on XP, and it took around 10 - 15 mins to copy a folder of 400megs between them both, but win 98 on both, it is taking up to 2 hours, any ideas please?
