Dear all,

i want to find the person who has deleted my file from a public folder on a network.
is there a log file which records everything whatever users do on a multi-tier network?

how can i find who has deleted my file. i hd md an excel file in my folder on a network P:/ drive & when i checked my folder a few minutes later, the file was not there. this has been happening recently with others also & i want to find the miscreant who is doing this. unfortunately, i am not the administrator of the network.

Can anybody help ASAP????

Is there anyway i can monitor or create a log of anybody browsing my folder, by creating a DOS batch file which will record everyperson activity viewing my folder or is there some other way. i am new to networks!

Thx & best rgds,

Your administrator can turn on FileAccess Auditing, but you should be able to change the security on the file, so no one else can delete it.

Excellent. Didn't know that. Very handy.

well, depending on how big a tight-*** his administrator is (i'm a HUGE tight-***), he may have disabled file security controls. this should still leave you the option of chaging the permissions on the FOLDER....which ought to be more usefull in the log run anyway (i'm guessing you've lost more than one file, and use more than one regularly).

okay, that said...don't mess with your network, your network drives/folders/files, your computer, your desk, your #2 pencils!!!
netadmins hate that. tell them about the problem and say that they're your only hope...tell him/her that your life will be over if they don't fix the problem. in short, appeal to his/her sense of superiority/ego....all netadmins have this sense...

or just bring him/her a donut from the break room...

Ego boosting and dounts. I need more people like you in my organization.

I am going to have to go with HJ on this one, the network administrator is definately the person that you want to talk to on this issue. Trying to fix things on your own could just make the problems worse.

Trying to tell the network administrator that he/she should do this/that to make sure YOUR stuff doesnt come up missing will likely not get you anywhere in your efforts.

Good Luck
