I've always found it very annoying the way that explorer opens a new window when mapping a drive (Win2K and XP). I know that you can hold down SHIFT when you click the Finish button while mapping a drive to suppress the new window, but I would like to disable this functionality by default.
I found a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that describes how to do this in the registry in Win2K. Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\MountPoints
and add a value named _NoWindowMappedDrive
However, this doesn't work in XP. For one thing, the MountPoints key is no longer used; it's now MountPoints2. Adding the value to that key doesn't do anything. Has anyone figured out how to do this? I'm sure I'm not the only person who finds this annoying, right?!
