Getting many messages and having trouble with restart and shutdown. Some examples:

Fatal exception has occurred at 0028:C0008753 in VXD VMM(01) current application will be terminated.

Program has performed an illegal operation. If problem persists contact vendor. Explorer caused an invalid page failt in module SHLWAPI.DLL @ 0167:70c0ce49

An error has occurred in Internet Explorer. IE will close. Please restart computer.

After reboot into Safe Mode:

Error: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 01000C1C. XMS DRIVER not installed.

HIMEM.SYS is missing - Make sure the file is in your Windows Directory. Windows has stopped - Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

Other messages:

Zone Alarm: Program has performed illegal operation and will be shut down. Details: ZA caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32.DLL at 0167:66801dlc

There are other messages but I thought this might be enough info for someone to help me get started on what I should do. Running Win98SE with 128 RAM. Run up-to-date antivirus and firewall on cable connection. Also regularly use Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. No scans have revealed anything that helps.

Have see where this message "Error: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 01000C1C. XMS DRIVER not installed." did indeed mean bad memory module/s. Changed the memory and cleared up a lot of problems.

Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement
