hi I am trying to upgrade my daughters compaq 5151 presario as cheaply as possible . It crashed and the restore disk is bad also ( and no longer available) . it has the amd k62 350 processor and 8 gb drive. I would like to upgrade to 20gb( all the motherboard will recognize) and upgrade the processor to 550 ( the limit) . I am also going to buy the winxp..... my problem is this...the win xp will not recognize the usb ports think they are usb1...Question if I upgrade to the 550 processor does this also upgrade the bios so that it will recognize the usb ports...any ideas or sugestions..need help here. would like to buy her another motherboard but as I have to replace the os its all too expensive ideas thanks Laols

Are you saying your Presario has USB2 ports and they are being seen as USB1 ports? IIRC, you'll need XP's "service pack 1" for proper recognition of USB2 ports. Or there *may* be a separate upgrade on Compaq's website just for that fix. Changing the processor will not affect the BIOS.

Just my opinion:

I personally think upgrading a Compaq of this generation is more trouble than it is worth. I've tried a couple of times and things are so cheap these days I just don't find it worth the frustration to fight with the Compaq to get things working.

I thought I would try to help on the 'cheap' front.

I am sending a PM to you with links to some stores I've used, prices and other info. I'm a big believer in "cheap", too. I'd post here, but I don't know if the commercialism is appropriate for the forums and I'm going to err on the side of caution.

laola,

If you are going to upgrade then do the following:

1. Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version on the Compaq website. You may need the microcode patch for the 550 processor.

2. Install the new processor and hard drive.

3. Install XP. There should be no problems with the USB recognition. The ports are USB 1.1 and not 2.0. Where did you get the information that XP won't recognize them?

Cheers
