You can deactive windows Messenger by changing the name in your directory by using Windows Explorer. This will keep it from opening on bootup and displaying that icon in your tray. I used Messenger Temp for the new name and then unchecked it from the msconfig startup menu.
You're not deactiviating it, you're just keeping anything from finding it. You can keep any program from opening by renaming its parent directory. The method you describe isn't new, but it's a bandaid not a fix. Best method is to uninstall Messenger.

I found this at a crack site I don't do XP
So I can't verify if it works or not
How to Remove MSN Messenger ?
First Remove your old version, then install new one.
Code:
http://www.usal.es/dcforum/User_files/3f70910465495fee.zip
or
Click Start > Run and in the Open: box type the following command
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
or
1. Locate the file named SYSOC.INF located at C:\Windows\Inf2. Open SYSOC.INF with Notepad and locate the line that reads as follows:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
3. Remove the word "hide" from the line, then close the file, saving the changes.
4. You can now use the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel to access the Add/Remove Windows Component option to remove Windows Messenger.
Hey,
WOW, that worked great. I can't beleive all of the crap I went through to try and get rid of that program.
Thanks so much!!
Latch
FINALLY!!
Copy and paste this in run and press OK. And it will do everything automatically.
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
I still can not beleive that it is finally over. That stalker is dead!!
LOL I hope we are on the same lines Good luck!!!!!
Thanks

I've heard a saying : about 99% of computer problems sit in front of the monitor
Don't take life too seriously, cos you'll never get out of it alive!
Much too complicated.
On XP Systems without SP1:
Click Start / Run Then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows
On XP Systems WITH SP 1:
Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs
Click on "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left
UNcheck "Windows Messenger"
Click "NEXT"
Click "Finish"
Reboot

im not exactly a computer genius by any stretch of the word, but wouldn't the easiest way to keep messenger from booting with windows would be to go in the start menu and type msconfig in the run command and uncheck messenger in the "startup" tab? that should keep messenger (or anything else) from automatically starting. It works for me anyway

You are correct...but again that only stops it from running. Some people prefer to actually uninstall it. /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

Hi there
It should be noted that by removing Windows Messenger you will loose the Remote Assistance option.

Why not just right-click on the icon in the tray, select preferances, then un-check the option that offers "load whenever windows starts"? Then you can still RUN it whenever you need it (ie, with remote assistance, though outlook works for this too), but it won't run every time you boot.

I use WXP HE SP1 (sorry to abbreviate) and i needed to find the Sysoc.inf in the Inf folder and remove the word Hide because it doesn't appeared in add/remove program before.

If you wanna make the max buddies for AIM a LOT more than just 200. Go into REGEDIT.EXE, then search for "MaxBuddies" , you may have to change the form of the numbers, but anyway. Once you find that, just switch it from 200 to whatever.
now...I am not TOTALLY sure if this works, cause i don't have that much buddies, but you guys should be able to figure it out.
If it works, e-mail me and tell me!
If you wanna talk to me on AIM, my screenname is "SeXyBoY2000180"
See Ya!
