I have a MediaBook 1000 and i think there is a problem with the hard drive. The laptop will allow me to install an operating system and will then run fine but then once I install anything else or hook up to the Internet, the computer crashes and when trying to reboot makes a funny whirring noise.

I assume that I have had a head crash which means I am in trouble.

Does anyone know if I can partition the hard drive so that the first, say, 2GB of the disk are not used by even the operating system then format the other 18GB and use that for everything including the OS? If this is possible, will this cure the problem and, most importantly, how do I do this? I assume FDISK but I've onle ever used FDISK to create a primary partition for the whole hard drive.

Any help appreciated, thanks.
