Encoding Problem/Internet Explorer (W98)

I have selected Auto Select under the Encoding option and "show pictures" in multi media, but I have to keep selecting Auto Select for every web page. Any suggestions??

I started experiencing a similar problem today when I upgraded to ZoneAlarm Pro. My problem is not associated with the "Auto Select" rather most pages come up was Western European (ISO) rather than the previous Western European (Windows). I had this same problem ! it started after I installed my dsl software and i did alot of things to fix it like, repair IE ,download ie again etc i even checked my internet options settings,deleted cookies,temp files, the whole nine yards but nothing worked and gave up and just kept on changing the encoding after every page load and one day it just got fixed by itself .(?).


unfortunately, I had to reinstall windows and my dsl software again and everything I did last time doesn't seem to work.no one seems to know what the problem could be and so far, nothing has seemed to work...

Okay, I researched this encoding problem very thoroughly and I think I found a definite answer in my case. A program called cmanager.exe was running at startup (from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run). This program is called Connection Manager and is used, in this case, by SBC DSL. I removed it from registry and the problem was fixed. I put it back in the registry as a troubleshooting method and the problem returned.

To use cmanager.exe anyway I found a workaround. Since stuff in the registry Run key runs very early in the boot process I think this is why cmanager.exe is interfering with the encoding in IE. I created a shortcut to cmanager.exe on the desktop and opened it after the computer was up and running and it didn't seem to cause any problems.

All this was tested on a Windows 98SE computer with Internet Explorer 6 all the critical Windows updates installed.
