opening file advice (W98)

Please help, each time I try to open a new file the computer automatically tries to open it in a specified file. Message keeps saying-this specified file is not a supportive type.

It's the file associations settings in your computer. First you have to know the extension [.xxx] of the file name and then you have to know what program/s can open that type file. Further advice will require knowing what type files can't be opened.
