Hi all

I got a similar problem on my old windowns 98 PC:

1. unable to right click to go to the properties on "my
computer";

2. run "msconfig" - all setups are empty, i.e. nothing at
"autoexec", at sys.ini, at sysconfig, etc.

3. unable to using "gpedit.msc" (like you can using it at
win2000 PC), to change the related configs, - is there a command like
gpedit.msc for win98, NT, or XP machines?

4. unable to use "shutdown" to shutdown win98 windows, but
only can reboot to dos prompt - have to manually turn off the power
to shutdown the PC, etc.

the above problem happen after I tried to fix the IE display foreign
language problems - after I upgrade from IE5 to IE6, the foreign
language display incorrectly, so I change IE6 back to IE5 from
control pannel's add/remove programs. And since then, I am unable to
right click on "my computer" to go to the
"properities" ....

Please Help.

Thanks and best regards,

Howdy, anba! /images/forums/icons/wink.gif
I think your best bet would be to copy over the OS, reinstall it.

Hi HH,

Thanks - but the problem is I even unable to uninstall or reinstall the win98 - I dont want to format the HD first since I have 8GB of data on it.

Is there commands that I can just reinstall the win98? I put the win98 installation CD in but just won't work - won't let me do the reinstall.

I know that I can try to ungrade to win 2000, but I want to keep the win98 in this PC.

Thanks again,
Anba

Hi anba!
I'm sorry I'm just now getting around to replying, I've been really busy.

If you haven't already, make sure your system is set in the BIOS to boot from floppy first.

> put the 98 disc in the cd-rom drive & close the welcome screen when it comes up
> put in a W98 bootable floppy
> Reboot
> When it stops at the screen with options choose: Start computer WITH cd-rom support
> When it stops at the A:\ prompt type in: (the letter of your cd-rom drive):\ (If the letter of your cd-rom drive is D, you need to type in E because the drive will move up a letter during this procedure. So you would type in: E:\ and then hit ENTER)
> At the next prompt type in: setup.exe and hit ENTER and that should get you going. /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

If that doesn't work let us know any error messages you get, word for word.

If you need a boot disk you can download one from here: www.bootdisk.com

Or you could run System File Checker:
RUN/ type sfc and change any files you think you need to from os disc.
