I have to go and look at a friends computer next week. He tells me that he cannot open a CD in either his CD Rom drive or his CD/R drive. If he clicks on these icons he gets a message to insert a disc, which he has already done. I have not used, or seen ME, is it bootable from the installation disc, or is there a repair option from a floppy start disc. If a floppy start disc boots to a command prompt, is there any simple commands I should know?

try to remove and reinstall the drivers for the cd roms. if that doesn't work try to udate the drivers for the cd rom. but it sounds to me that something has hijacked the ability of the drives... somehow. need more info to help further.

i don't complain. i just tweak until my arms
fall off.... tweakability is the code name of windows.
if it 1st down work. tweak it out until it does.

Capricorn,
You can go to (Click) Bootdisk.com</font color=red> (http://bootdisk.com/><font) to download a WinMe bootdisk. You will need one floppy disk. There is more than one type of bootdisk available (eg: WinMe - MS's original; WinMe - OEM) so make sure you select the correct one.
Sorry I am unable to help with any commands as DOS isn't my first language.
As for booting from the installation disk - If neither of his CD drives are working, does that matter?
Good luck,
