Why does IE insist on downloading a web page i've got as cached (WME)

I've got Web Cleanup on Norton Systemworks and with the web pages i visit the most, i've got the web history, cache and some cookies saved. So when i empty C:\windows\Temporary Internet Files, it keeps the images etc. for quicker viewing next time i visit the page.

So why, when i have one of the web pages on my list, does it insist on downloading the images i've just viewed? Or i'll click on a link to another page which will have almost the exact same layout and images, yet it still downloads all the images?

I've got DSL but some web sites like www.nintendo-europe.com take almost minutes to load :(

One possibility is look in IE Tools, Internet Options, under Temporary Internet Files click on 'Settings'. Perhaps you have the option to "Check for newer versions of stored pages = Every visit to the page"

Ok, i had it set to "automatically".

I use automatically myself.

I pasted www.nintendo-europe.com into my address bar, hit the Go button and counted to 3 when it had completely loaded.

I hit the back button to come back here and again hit the forward button to return to nintendo's site. Again it took a count of 3 to complete loading the page. I am using broadband cable.

While there I looked at View, Source and found the page to be a Style sheet operating in a Java environment.

I am running both MS' Virtual machine and Sun's Java.

Under IE Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, MS VM I have JIT Compiler for virtual machine (enabled) with a check next to it.

My thought is either your security settings are preventing the java to run, Norton is scanning it and it is taking to long, you do not have the correct java tools installed or your java settings needs to be turned on.

Otherwise your DSL connection should complete much quicker.

I don't think that caching these pages help since it is something that needs to run versus just load.

I've got MS' Virtual machine as well, and like you have MS VM I have JIT Compiler for virtual machine (enabled) with a tink.

I went to download Sun's Java and it was a whooping 84+ Mb !

I've got ADSL but damn. I'm not gonna download that sucker just for a few web pages that take longer than normal.

The page does load without errors, its just takes a little time. Oh well, thanks for your reply, i'll just carry on as normal.

FWIW:
I use cable modem on an IBM 1G AMD machine using WinMe/IE6-SP1.
I do not have Sun's Java. I have enabled JIT Compiler for virtual machine. The Nintendo site loads in under 2 seconds for me.

The download is 7.88mb from <a target="_blank" href=http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp>http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp</a> but I do not think that is your problem.

I suspect it is Norton scanning the webpage.

Ok, i'm being dim. Whats it scannig for and is there a way to stop it?

I do not use Norton's AV so I can not tell you how to adjust it's settings to overcome this problem.
Perhaps another can or have a look around within Norton's console for the settings.

And hello Nana!

Just a thought on a different track...perhaps you actually have too big a TIF. There is a school of thought that perhaps when the cache is too big then pages take alot longer to load (obviously the scan time of the TIF is longer the bigger the file).

I have all mine set to 128mb. Since I also have broadband the difference seems to be fairly negligable whilst either downloading the site or retrieving it from the cache.
