When you format windows ME drive C: , which file gets formatted first?

Don't know about which file is first but the hard drive is what gets formatted [or floppy or CD-RW disk] and any files stored on the disk takes on the formatting of the disk.
Installation routines determine which of the programs files are decompressed/written to the disk first.

Read <a target="_blank" href=http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3/asm/mbr/FORMAT98.htm>this</a>, and see if this helps.

I would agree with Bert and say it's not a file but a sector on the drive (probably the FAT).
Cheers

LOL trick question here are you formating the drive or are you installing windows me...
When you format everthing gets wiped out....
on the newer maxtor drives it really is not a format they write new tables to the drive... it is allot quicker than doing a format...
Thanks
Mac!!!
I've heard a saying : about 99% of computer problems sit in front of the monitor<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by coolsights2000 on 07/17/03 22:23.</FONT></P>
Here's my inexperience showing again -
Why does it matter what gets deleted first? The whole drive is going to be wiped out anyway.

Good point Nana. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
I agree with Andy, too. The FAT or MBR.
Look at a nasty virus. They tend to go after the MBR area first.
If that gets messed up, most people will be inclined to reformat, as they think everything is already lost. Even though that is not entirely true.
Always glad to help!

formatting doesn't go after one file at a time. also when you format, there is no way to detect or report to the person formatting which file is going first... no log is created and besides why is it important to know. some secret are best kept by bill gates. to bad this is one of them... :-)
i don't complain. i just tweak until my arms
fall off.... tweakability is the code name of windows.
if it 1st down work. tweak it out until it does.
Hi Allan,
How goes it?
Good to hear from you. Long time no see - my fault entirely.

Josh,
Welcome to WinGuides, (better late than never, as "they" say) the best forum on the net!
I've read several of your replies. You're a great addition to WinGuide's knowledgeable membership. Glad to see you're sticking around.

Thanks, Nana! /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
I planned on sticking around, too. Learn some and share what assorted things I do know. I'm "Tech Support" for everyone I know, but where does "Tech Support" go, when they don't have the answer?
On another note... I've seen <font color=green>Advisors, Gurus, and Mentors</font color=green>... But I'm surprised there's no <font color=green>Lifers</font color=green> /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif
Always glad to help!

Josh,
You'll see that some people may not post every day but they've been members of WinGuides for a very long time and frequently visit to read any new postings. You've been here for a while now so you've likely run into some of them.
Regarding our "titles"; they used to be given automatically depending on the number of postings a member made. AFAIK, that has been changed and they're being given on merit now.
I don't know about <font color=green>"Lifers".</font color=green> To me, it sounds like a sentence imposed for reprehensible behavior as opposed to a title earned for knowledge and/or diplomacy. /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

That's kind of what I was assuming. I've wondered about the way that works a couple times, but I'm not too worried about it.

How true, how true...
Either a sentence, or an addiction... but they have programs or things you can take for that. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

I was cleaning up some unlabeled floppy disks and found a small disk erase program on one. The following is quoted in part from the readme.txt file on it:
** Once this task is started, and even if you abort the procedure, your hard disk data may already be lost and irretrievable. Please remember that MBR, Partition Tables and FAT are located in the first few cylinders of your hard disk and this ERASE functions starts writing from this area of your hard disk.
