You can create more Internet security zones for IE6 and propably for IE5 and IE 5.5 too. You can find security zone settings from following registry keys:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings\Zones" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet Settings\Zones"
To add more zones, you have to duplicate one of predefined zones. I've duplicated zone number 2, which is internet zone. Here are some instructions how to do it.
- Use regedit and export desired registry branch. I prefer to export using save as type "win9x/nt 4".
- Export both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branches to separate files
- Load files to editor and change zone number (for example 2) to next availabe number (for example 5)
- Change "Description" and "DisplayName" keys for desired text
- Locate proper icon file for your new zone and put it into "Icon" subkey
Now you can merge these new settings to windows registry. After that you can open Internet Properties and Security page.
You should see there a new zone. You can customize it here and add new websites to this zone.
Unfortunately name of the new zone is not displayed correctly here. I don't know why. My fifth zone is named as
"Special" with descripion "This zone contains all special Web sites" but IE displays it with
local intranet site's descrition. If somebody knows how to fix that, please tell.
Why then have more security zones? I like to keep Internet zone to prompting for various things. That keeps unwanted popups away. Of course that means lot of message box prompts. I put regulary used web sites either to "script enabled internet zone" or to "script disabled internet zone". And with Norton Internet Security, I don't have to see popup windows or unwanted advertisements.
