Hi there

I work in a place running an NT server with wireless connections to various laptops and PCs. My PC is running windows 98 but after a recent 'network overhaul' my PC connection to the server has stayed down for FOUR days. I'm told that my connection will be redone 'When time permits'.
Am I correct in thinking that reregistering my machine to the network is just a 5 min admin job???? or is it really a long protracted affair!
Advice please. Thanks a lot

That depends on a lot of things. If it is simply registering the machine with the NT server manager, then it is more like 20 min. If it is just an IP assignment, it's <5 min. If it is a hardware or cabling issue, it could be 5 days.

In any event, I can tell you from experience that anything that can be described as a "network overhaul" is no simple matter. The IT people are probably running around like they're bailing water out of a sinking sieve. They are having to prioritize and - I hate to sound callous, but... - you're probably pretty low on the list. No doubt one of them knows what to do and that it doesn't take long, but these little 5 min. jobs have a habit of turning into big, ugly time-eating monsters, especially when you don't have the time to spare and should be somewhere else.

Don't take it personally. Chances are they've got their hands full and you're not the only one they are ignoring.

A little tip from one the guys you are dealing with: If you give them a reminder from time to time in a friendly, sympathetic manner it will move you up the list ahead of the other people who are *****in' at them with a snarl.
