on XP, right-click on Recycle bin and click on 'Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.' But even then this 'permanent' deletion (even shift+delete, which doesn't move files to the Recycle Bin also. it removes files immediately when deleted), isn't permanent. If you have important documents or something that need to be gone forever, get something like McAffee shredder or Webroot's Window Washer. See when you shift+delete or empty recycle bin, the data just doesn't disappear. It just loses it's 'pointer' to the data, so all that data is still on there (the drive; And with special programs, you can recover these 'permanently' deleted files). But if you use Shredder or Window Washer, its gone, but yet not and you can't recover it with those special programs. Shredder probably scrambles the data. Window Washer sets the files/data to zero (therefore having no data in it and making it unrecoverable, see Webroot website for more info).
