Lynnecske,
You'll have to provide more details to allow us to help. Was there a specific reason you ran scandisk and defrag i.e. were you seeing problems that made you do this?
When you say you tried to use the restore CD what errors were you getting?
Is the drive recognized in the BIOS?
If you download a W98 SE boot disk from www.bootdisk.com can you access the C: when you boot to the floppy?
If you provide the answers to the above it may give us a better idea of what is going on.
Cheers
Andy

Cannot even sign in to the computer...as sooon as it tries to start up it says registry nonoperable, run SCANREG. However I can't get a DOS prompt or sign on the computer at all so I can't do ANYTHING. I just sit on a gray screen....I can get to the bios and everything is there that should be... The Windows ME restore CD's dont do anything....and this is a Gateway if that makes a difference. I am on the other computer in the house in case you are thinking I've lost my mind!

Did you try the bootdisk?
These repeatable registry errors are usually due to bad memory. Youc an try swapping out the memory on the system to see if it helps.
