On my Windows 200 machine, 1.4ghz, 384mb pc 2100 ram, I am getting incredibly long startup times between when windows begins to initiate and when it calms down and everything is ready. This includes loading the desktop wallpaper (it stays blank for a long time) and system tray programs. Also, my computer takes about 90 seconds, I have timed, from when I click 'shutdown' and when it actually turns itself off.

Does anyone have any tweaks or general advice on how to drastically reduce these times, as it is becoming a large inconvenience. Thanks!

Dex,

Download Mike Lins startup control panel or MSCONFIG for XP and disable all the startup programs that you don't need running.

You can get the control panel from here:

Go into Add/Remove Programs and, if you've got it, remove Q329170.
