View Full Version : Need to Disable Autologon (WXP-Pro)

All,

I was playing with WinXP Pro, setup a new user with limited privileges, enabled that user to autologon, and now the system reboots every time it gets to "Loading Personal Preferences". I'm sure that this has something to do with a program that runs fine with admin privileges but not with limited privileges. My question is how can I either turn off (without be able to get to the GUI) or bypass the Autologon feature in WinXP Pro. I have read in a couple of different groups (including this one) the pressing SHIFT while booting will disable to autologon feature (and possible not run "Startup Items") but this does not seem to work with WinXP Pro SP1 with all of the latest patches downloaded from MS. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
On

Try booting to safe mode. Do you still have the problem?

Andy,

I should have mentioned this, I have tried to boot to all modes available using the F8 startup command with no success at all. All of the modes eventually say "Loading Personal Preferences" at which time the computer restarts. Any other suggestions? I am seriously thinking about learning how to hook the another system to the broken one via cable and using regedit on the broken one from the second computer (you can do this right????).

Thanks, On

You can also take the drive out of the broken one and install it as a secondary drive in a good system. You can then use resplendant registrar www.resplendence.com to edit the registry.

Holding down shift during bootup should also disable the autologon feature but I believe you've already tried this.

Cheers
