Been trying for days now to prevent windows messenger from booting up. Tried settings, msconfig, group policy, and whatnot. Can any one suggest a way to prevent it from booting?

Try manually editing the registry:

Look for the MSMSGS value in these keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run and delete it.

If your saying you don't want it at all, you could always uninstall it.
Look in sysoc.inf. Find the word "hide" and remove it.
Go to Add & Remove programs and waste it.

well I have been searching for days too on how to stop MS Messenger from loading so I can manually load when I want it. Bad thing about it too is if you end the process it knows to automatically load it back up again. If anyone has the solution I'm in to hear it. I'm even thinking about uninstalling it and just use Trillian but Trillian is not so great itself sometimes you need the real Messenger to do things eg. unicode

I just delete the folder that messenger resides in to take care of the problem. This may not work for you since you want to still use it, so maybe you can rename the folder to something else and change the path on your shortcut. Windows should still look for it in c:\program files\messenger\msgs.exe. If you do this, you may end up with an error when you log on, but you can just look for the entry in the registry that is giving that error and you will be home free.

Hope this works.

Okay, may be I have stopped the msmsgs.exe from loading in the background after completely uninstalling MS Messenger 4.7 for xp then went and downloaded the 5.0 version for windows and installed that version, so far.. I have not found msmsgs.exe loading by itself.
