After dividing my hard drive into 2 dynamic volumes (leaving no space left for extending volumes or mounting folders to volumes) I'm trying to slim down the C: drive.

There's a folder under Windows called ServicePackFiles. My XP SP1 .cab file is in both the Driver Cache folder and ServicePackFiles folder. Is it safe to delete the ServicePackFiles folder?

Also, for any hotfixes/updates, I was originally saving a backup of changed files. Can the $Ntuninstall folders be deleted safely (and their log files) or is it safer to uninstall them from the Control Panel, then re-install later (w/o archiving)?

Allan ...

Are you saying that the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 is the Archive created when installing SP1 with the option to un-install it?

Thanks,

Yes Tom, as I recall that's so. I believe it's only installed on straight upgrades as opposed to slipstream installations (though it's been a while & I wouldn't swear to that now). Of course if you have a slipstream disk there's absolutely no problem. The only time it would be an issue is if you need to run SFC / scannow, but even then the poster says he has it in the dllcache folder anyway.

My suggestion to everyone who upgrades to sp1 is to have a slipstream cd as backup (in the event you need to run sfc /scannow, or want to do a repair install, or a complete reinstall). Then you can safely delete all sp-1 folders from the HD.

Thanks, Allan ...

I ordered the SP1 CD and didn't make a slipstream cd. Believe I'll let the SevicePackFiles stay; they aren't hurting anything.
