I have been encountering this problem of late. When I am navigating in the windows explorer, I normally click on the folder in the left pane to see the files in the right pane. Then when i want to collapse the expanded folder tree, I click on the - to the left of the folder. Here the wierd thing happens. The folder collapses for a second and again expands. I have to click on the - sign again to collapse it. Cannot find any solution to this behaviour. Interestingly, this happens only on the highlighted folder. If the folder is not selected and I click the - sign, it collapses in a single click but if it is a selected folder, the wierd stuff i said happens.
IS THERE ANY REGISTRY TWEAK or any other tweak to correct this problem? I defrag my drives regularly. I have Windows 98se.

I use the single click method and find a similar problem opening Notepad files. I often get two occurances of Notepad open.

I believe it is because of the way I click on the file.
Similar to clicking and dragging without the drag; meaning that I click downward but do not release immediately so what happens is that I get a click on the down stroke and another click on the up stroke.

The single click method is similar to your situation whereas the problem only occurs on a selected folder. Selecting the folder is the first of two clicks on a double click setup.

I find if I just tap the mouse key then I always get one occurance.

I am not saying this to bore you with my anomolies but to suggest that your's is a similar situation. I am suggesting that the behavior is User related rather than soft/hardware related.

My mouse has a hair trigger I suppose. Like the gun fighters of days gone by I like the hair trigger otherwise.

It is not only with mouse that this happens. It ALSO happens when I use only the keyboard arrows for the manouevres. And I have tried using the key-stroke pretty fast not allowing the pressure too long. Had it been with the mouse only, I would have thought it has something to do with my way of handling it. I even tried asking my friends to operate for a few folders and everyone faced the same scenario and they were all wondering why that happens.
Win98 still keeps on amazing me with newer and newer behaviour everytime.

Do you have View as Web Page Selected? I have heard of the Folders pane doing this and it is usually because of Active Desktop. The solution has always been a workaround. Not viewing as Web Page.

Yes I was using View as Web page. Changing it to the old style DID make a difference. Now that behaviour is gone. Thanks a lot. But still wierd the way Microsoft apps behave at times.
