i got two hard drives installed one primary master with xp pro and one primary slave with 98 first edition. how do i edit the boot.ini file and what do i change to make the primary slave to boot up instead of the primary master? i dont want to keep changing jumpers.. do i only change the boot.ini file on my primary master hard drive which is my c drive ?
also is there a way to edit the boot.ini file to have the two hard drives show up during boot up to pick the one i want to use, for example when in win xp pro you go into safe mode you have several option to pick from .

thanks

The dual-boot procedure is established when Win9x/ME is installed first in C: [has to be on the boot/system drive] and then WinXP is installed last, each in their own partition/drive.

WinXP writes to the boot sector of C:, copies 2 or 3 files plus the boot.ini file to the root of C: when it is installed on D:. D: could be a second partion on the Primary Master drive or a second drive.

If you don't wish to deal with a Repair/re-install of WinXP [repair takes about 45 minutes, just did one], you could go to www.dalco.com (http://www.cyberguys.com>www.cyberguys.com,), or www.computergate.com and look for a keylock switch in a bracket that fits in the front of the case. Then you could shut down, turn the switch, and reboot to the other hard drive. What the switch appears to do is make the jumper setting for you without having to open the case after installation.

Or you could get a Mobile Rack with an extra cassette and do the shutdown/change routine.

The recommended and cheapest solution is to reinstall/repair Win XP while it’s in the primary slave slot. If for some reason you don’t want to do that then there is a software solution as well as the hardware one suggested by Bert. Get your hands on a decent boot loader (or Boot Manager as they like to be called) and you’ll be able to boot Windows 98 from the second hard disk.

, Power Boot (http://www.osloader.com/features.htm>), and System Commander 7 (http://www.powerquest.com/bootmagic/>Boot) can all boot Windows 95/98 from any hard drive.

As this is a software solution it’s the least reliable method so you might want to take that into account and back up your data (actually, you should do that regardless of which option you go for).

Technically speaking, it DID get it right. You had a fully working installation of Win XP until you confused it by changing hard disks around.
If you look in your boot.ini file, you’ll see this line;

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

That line gives the NT loader the exact path to the windows installation. Before modifying the boot.ini file, I suggest you read this MS article BOOT.INI and ARC Path Naming Conventions and Usage”

Modifying the boot.ini file will correct the error but will not be enough to make your XP bootable and that’s why Bert suggested a repair installation.
I have never had to do a repair installation (I just restore from backups) but I believe the steps listed in this webpage are correct
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
Make sure the drive containing Windows 98 is connected to the Primary Master Channel and the XP one to the Slave Channel before you do the repair.

Personally, I don’t think anything but a fresh install will help you. I have a theory that I have not had the chance to test and it’s; what will happen when drive letters change??
When you swap drives around, Win98 will be drive c:\ (First primary partition on first hard disk) and XP will be given the letter D:\.
All your applications and shortcuts in XP will still be pointing to files or applications in drive c:\
Will the XP repair fix this? Or will you have an endless number of error message every time you want to open a file or a program?

Please let us know if you find out
