256 colors (W98)

Recently my brother attempted to play a new cd-rom on his computer. A message came up telling him he needs to swich to 256 colors which he promptly did. After he clicked apply the computer told him he needed to restart his computer before the changes would take effect. He restarted his computer only to find that when he went back into windows his computer was still running in 16 color mode. We both tried to change the settings multiple times but the computer would always restart in 16 colors. How can we fix this problem?

Go into your display properties and then go to advanced section under settings. Check the box for "Apply settings without Rebooting"

although the above answer may work to keep from restarting most likely the reason your changes arent being kept is because you're loading the wrong driver check with the vendor/manufacter to be sure you're loading the right driver
