View Full Version : 'Cannot determine file system of drive' boot error. (WXP-Home)

I am using BOOT.INI with: WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /SOS .

The /SOS switch serves to display device driver names (basically omitting the Windows XP Splash Screen).

The Boot to Windows XP is always successful,
but during the boot-load ---
an error message displays near end of the boot sequence.

The message appears to refer to a Volume Mount Point {GUID} File System Type error,
whereby the boot sequence does not recognize the File System for a drive VolumeName=
{629ff3cc-294a-11d7-9df4-806d6172696f}.

Please view the exact error message further down.

Any input on how to correct this error (see below)?

I already accessed following protocols:

(1) Viewed "ntbtlog.txt" but it shows nothing about the boot error message.

(2) Ran "Check Disk Utility" but it did not correct/replace the volume file entry:
Using Command Prompt syntax [>chkdsk /f].

(3) VolumeName Registry entry seems not associated with a 'specific' DOSDevice Drive Letter,
but does have a StringValue for BaseClass=Drive.

-----

The following boot text message is in white letters on black screen and shows for 10 seconds
(near the end of boot-load, before finalizing successful boot to start Windows XP):

"Cannot determine the file system of drive\??\volume{629ff3cc-294a-11d7-9df4-806d6172696f}".

Hello,

The section:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]
"\\??\\Volume{629ff3cc-294a-11d7-9df4-806d6172696f}"

Would seem like the location of the problem, but unfortunately I do not know what is wrong with that key (if anything).

Regards

Simon
