Is there a registry tweak to disable the right click -> set as background option in Internet Explorer?
I have read a few posts and I have disabled the display control panel, however the students can still set the background via IE's annoying workaround.
I have heard of a folder creation option, but that is not an option for me since we have over 200 students here with their own accounts and profiles.
Thanks in advance for any help.

This one should help.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
Create a new DWORD and name it:
NoChangingWallpaper
Modify and assign a value of 1 to enable the restriction.
If you don't have the ActiveDesktop subkey, create it.

Unfortunately that key did not work to disable changing the desktop from Internet Explorer. When a student right clicks on an image in IE and clicks Set as Background, it still changes the background to the image selected. Is there any way to disable this feature in IE?
Thanks

I read this tip somewhere and have only used it on Win9x.
1. Locate the folder where IE send the picture file to. (search for "internet explorer wallpaper")
2. Delete the picture file and in its place create a new folder with the name "internet explorer wallpaper.bmp"
When somebody tries to set a picture from IE as the background, the message Access is denied pops up.
Hopes that helps.

I'm sorry. I should have read more carefully. If you have XP Pro and a multiple User environment, setting that restriction in Current User will only set the policy for the Identity signed in at the moment.
A better way to manage your system would be to use gpedit. There are a lot of good templates there to help you manage the System.
That's the Group Policy editor. You can access it by going to start>Run and typing gpedit.msc and then pressing enter. Once the console opens
Go to:
User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Control Panel
Highlight Control Panel and look in the right pane.
Double click Display in the right pane.
Select Prevent Changing Wallpaper. Enable it.
That will restrict everybody.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I am in a multiuser setting, so the folder idea wont work for me (i have tried it)
Unfortunately I have had limited experience with Policies and Profiles for XP, but this is something that I want to learn and impliment over this summer. Do you know of anywhere that I could look to learn more about these features?
Thank you for your help and excellent advice.

This tweak worked great for disabling changing from Internet Explorer, but unfortunately Microsoft in all their wisdom put another work around to changing the desktop wallpaper.
Even with this tweak installed, a user can right click on an image on the hard drive and go to Set as Desktop Background and change the background. Does anyone know how to get rid of this option?
While on this topic, does anyone know a registry setting where I can set the background for all users including new users who havent logged onto a machine yet (default background for everyone who logs onto a machine)?
