Hi there oh boy is this stressing me out, I was so lucky to get a Digital Camera brought for me by my daughters & wife, but I had to install a USB card to my computer, thats how it downloads the pictures! /images/forums/icons/smile.gif I'm new to these mega contraptions, they truly are awesome (the camera's I mean)

Anyway after installing a <a target="_blank" href=http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=107412>Hi-speed USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card</a> I did everything I was supposed to do booted my computer up expecting it to say "Windows has found new Hardware" but it didnt say nothing at all.... so I opened the search for new Hardware utility did a scan & it still found nothing... ggrrr I was thinking maybe its a faulty card, I took it back to the shop & they swapped it only to find it did the same thing.... man I was thinking whats going on....

Can Anyone Please Help Me Solve This
I'd truly love to be able to get on with enjoying my new digital camera. . . . my camera is <a target="_blank" href=http://www.dolphinfast.com/products/1015.html>Here </a> if you want to know something about it.

My computer is a Pentium II Celeron 333mghtz &gt;&lt; 160mb Ram Win98SE

These things are sent to try us /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

I can not tell you how to get USB2 working on your machine but how about an alternative.
I assume your machine already has USB1.

How about a USB Media reader.
For example &lt; $15
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=561858/search=media%2520reader/ut=421e738162c4381f>http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=561858/search=media%2520reader/ut=421e738162c4381f</a>

There are many types out there.

Hally,

Windows 98 SE doesn't have native USB2.0 support so you will have to install the drivers for the card.

Is the card identified in device manager as an unknown device?

If you want to verify that the card is seen by the system then download CPUID from here <a target="_blank" href=http://www.h-oda.com>www.h-oda.com</a> and run the utility. Click on the device list icon (looks like a graphics card) and post the contents.

Cheers
Andy

To check to see if you have USB go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.
Under Components it should be listed. Click on it to see if it expresses any problems that may lead to a resolve.

Mine looks like this:
Basic resources: None
Driver: USB\0001
Driver Date: 5-11-1998
Driver: usbhub.sys
File Size: 27184 (0x6A30)
File Date: 5/26/1999 8:0 AM
Company Name: Microsoft Corporation
File Version: 4.10.2019

Hopefully you will see USB 2 in there.
Have you tried the camera hooked up yet?

I am thinking that you should or should have:
1. Installed the softeware
2. Install the Card
3. Hook up the camera
4. Turn the camera on to PC mode.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for your reply Andy /images/forums/icons/wink.gif I'm eager to get this thing all happening ... now to answer your question, no it's not identified in device manager as an unknown device at all...

The new USB card came with an install disc, but my problem is when I boot up it doesnt even say "found new hardware" ... I'm sitting here ready to install the drivers but cannot until its recognised by my computer, man this is testing

I will get the CPUID download & see what happens..... thanks Andy back soon

I am not sure if windows 98 supports USB 2 at all. I have an ADS USB 2 card, it didn't come with any drivers at all. When I installed it windows loaded the drivers for usb 1.1 support. I used windows update to download and install the USB 2 drivers for win 2k. I can't remember if I ever used this card with windows 98, but it should work at the regular 1.1 speed, so should yours.

Hi Hally

I wonder if making sure you have the most upto date motherboard drivers would make a difference, I know that on one older board I've seen (I think it was an Epox) that very little (newer hardware) was recognised by the PCI slots/Windows (not sure of the correct terminology!!) until the latest drivers were installed.

With the Program Andy asked you to download press the 'Maroon' coloured button along the top for system info. This, at least on here, gives make and model number of your motherboard, along with the BIOS info. Maybe post that here if you can't find the downloads-we can all have a look then!!

Later

Jase

If at first you don't succeed, then you probably shouldn't skydive!

Arr...erm..can't find anything out at all I'm afraid. One more little utility from Ami (your Bios Manufacturer) can "be gotton" from the link below.

It's a very small utility which should hopefully tell you something (it told me nothing however as mine is an award bios!") ..fyi screen goes quite black for the first second or two!!

As I said before the CPUID prog told me my motherboard, as I have just checked by running down into the basement and digging out the box!!

Maybe someone else here knows where to look, the only thing I came up with was the Ali site which didn't under any circumstances want to give any support!!!!

Sorry I wasn't any help. The easiest way is to take the cover off your machine, grab a torch and look for make and model number on the motherboard I guess!!

Fingers crossed it's a VIA chipset, if so then you can just download their 4in1 driver pack and you should be good to go!

This is some other info I had saved a friend got it for me... but its a bit chinese to me haha..

Hally,

From the details from WCPUID I can tell that it is an ALI chipset on the system board. It does recognize a USB controller within the chipset (not the plug in card) so I'm surprised you don't have any external USB connections. Are there any USB connections on the motherboard? The camera should work fine in a USB 1.0 socket.

Cheers
Andy

Do you have Quick boot enabled in your BIOS

If you do disable it....

When you have Quick Boot enabled it bypasses allot of the normal start up test,,,,

Thanks

Hi Hally

I must have read a hundred pages on PC Chips and your motherboard now, with absolutely no luck...I have found drivers IDE, sound, and modems but none which I think will be any use!

You do (should) have USB ports on your computer, if you've never used them they're probably at the bottom on the back, covered in dust!!

As for Windows not seeing your card, no idea. I can't imagine that Belkin made two bad cards and you got both of them! Their FAQ was no use whatsoever!!

I'm really sorry I couldn't wave the magic wand and get it working for you. I'm sure that someone else here will be able to though.

Good Luck

Jase /images/forums/icons/frown.gif

Now, I really must go and do some work!!!! LOL

Oh boy Andy I wish I knew what to look for ... now I'm looking at the mother board right now & I cant see any USB plug that my lead will go into, certainly on the back external party of my computer there's nothing in the USB range.... If it was inside the computer wouldn't that be rediculous because what would people do to plug there camera or whatever into it... I'm looking inside but see nothing. Wow this camera has been a great cruise through technology street, I had know idea what USB ports was yesterday hahaha

I'm wondering how I can tell if my system has the wrong VIA driver installed, how can one tell if its the right or wrong one .... I'm just trying to cover every base here, & I'm kind of thinking aloud... does anyone know any reason at all that might stop my computer from seeing the USB Card in my PCI slot... Please .... hey I'm not stressing out really, this is educational to me /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

Thanks in Advance /images/forums/icons/cool.gif

I wouldn't go installing VIA drivers, yours is a ALi Aladdin Pro II chipset (renamed it seems to BXcell).

Mightn't take too kindly to any other stuff!!

Jase

PS On this link <a target="_blank" href=http://iceberg.pchomeworld.com/cgi-win/L3Static/L3Stat.asp?Part=MB65856>http://iceberg.pchomeworld.com/cgi-win/L3Static/L3Stat.asp?Part=MB65856</a>
it says that the ATX Form Card, with amongst other things your USB was an optional extra!! No help I know.....

I'm just wondering if this computer already has the wrong VIA driver installed, do you know how I could tell ..... yes it is BXcel & about 6 months ago I did a format on this computer & I installed the M726 ide driver... I wonder if there is some other drivers I need to install... Doh

Hally,

There's an integrated driver for the ALI chipset that needs to be installed. If everything else is working you probably have it installed already.

Here's what I would do:

1. Go into setup and see if the card is recognized by the BIOS. If it is not then I would try and get a later version of the BIOS as the one you have is dated 1995. You can get a later BIOS from here.

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS.html>http://www.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS.html</a>

If you do flash the BIOS make sure that you don't switch off the power during flashing as these old boards most likely won't support flash recovery.

2. If it is recognized in the BIOS then look for the latest integrated drivers for the motherboard. It will include a PCI miniport driver.

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy /images/forums/icons/wink.gif I'm thinking of flashing a new bios because my one is like you said 95... but I'm here to say a big thank you to you all ... Today I ended up solving the problem by taking the 2.0 USB card back to the shop & swapping it for the 1.1 USB card, it was still a PCI card but because it was a bit older it was recognised by windows this time.... Hooray so needless to say I am playing with my Digital Camera now /images/forums/icons/smile.gif great fun, these things are mega technology....

Thanks Again /images/forums/icons/cool.gif

Glad you got it working. If you are not seeing any problems then just leave the BIOS as it is.
