View Full Version : Enable/Disable DMA (W2K)
Hi,
I need to disable DMA for one of my DVD Drives. The firmware needs updating and part of the flash instructions is to make sure DMA is disabled for that drive.
I have searched through the W2k help files and can find nothing on the subject.
Help from you experts would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Alan

Alan,
Go to device manager and expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right click on the controller that you have the drive connected to (typically the second controller) and select properties. In the properties dialog box select the advanced tab and you will have the ability to set the transfer mode to PIO only.
Cheers
Andy
Andy thanks for your swift reply. I am using W2k sp3. Following your suggestions I can report that there is no advance tab. Just General -Driver- Resources.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Looks like you are clicking on the DVD ROM selection. Further down the device listing there is a selection for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. You need to expand that one and select secondary controller.

Hi,
Andy I'm expanding the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Intel(R) 82801db Ultra ATA Controller
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
All of the above three DO NOT have an advance tab option. Only General - Driver -Resources.
I'm signed on as the Administrator in W2k Pro sp3.
It seems to me that for some reason the Advance tab is hidden. Could it be something to do with a setting in gpedit.msc ?? I know my way arround w2k, but would not descripe myself as a power user.
Any ideas folks?
Thanks again
Alan

Alan,
You may be able to disable it in your BIOS settings. Also in the settings tab is there a DMA checkbox as shown in this article?

Andy,
Thanks for your continued help.
The diagram on the link that you suggested is for win98. I know that because the Auto Insert notifcation feature (in settings) is not activated through device manager in w2k, but via gpedit.msc. Needless to say there is no DMA tickbox.
I will take a look in the bios.
Thanks again,
Alan

Hi Alan
I don't know if this is any help, I've copied it from the link below.
Consult the motherboard manual for instructions as to how to change the IDE controller settings to support DMA. In most BIOSs the IDE controller settings are listed in the "Integrated Peripherals" section of the BIOS menu. Set both controllers to AUTO. Very few hard disks these days can't cope with the AUTO setting, but if you do hit a problem when you reboot after changing the setting, just go back into the BIOS and change it back to its original setting. However, be aware that the AUTO setting for IDE controllers is not the same as the AUTO setting for drives, which appears under the "Standard CMOS Features" section of the BIOS menu. This AUTO refers to the drive parameters, which determine the capacity of the disk or drive, and bears no relation (whatsoever) to DMA.
The link is

It all pretty much says what Andy has been saying but hey, you can't have too much info!

I realise that you're trying to turn DMA off, but it might help on where to look!
If at first you don't succeed, then you probably shouldn't skydive!
Hi Jase,
Thanks for your input. I'll have a feret around in the bios.

Alan, I'm guessing that you have the Intel Application Accelerator installed, because it causes the Advanced Tab to disappear in Device Manager. This is normal with IAA. Here's a link:

You'll need to use the IAA utility to alter your DMA settings:
