Hi:

I have a minor problem that someone may be able to help me out with.

I run the Windows'98 first edition and the CPU is a Pentium 550, lots of RAM, etc. Here is my problem:

In the system tool bar at the bottom right of the desktop, I have my icon for the "volume" control. When I click on it, it brings up the small window that has the sliding bar on it for adjusting the volume level. And this fucntion works just fine, no problem there.

What my problem is, is that normally, when you click on the slider, you get a "bell" to hear the level. Now, I get no sound from it. I can get all my sounds from different functions just fine, and the levels can be adjusted. The only thing I can't get is the "bell" sound when I click on the bar itself to test the level.

I have checked the option settings, etc. and the Midi preferences and they are looking good. All I can think of is that by installing the new WinAmp v3.0, and selecting the preferences for that program, it may have effected this in some way. Other than that, I don't think I have changed anything.

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance,
ve6tp

Go to Control Panel, Sounds and check some of the settings there. Choose a different sound for the Default ding. Test some of the sounds for one you like.

Hi BertImmenschuh:

Thanks for the fast reply.

I went to CONTROL PANEL/SOUNDS/and the sounds tab. I had checked this menu before and could see nothing wrong. But ....

You said to try a different sound for "THE DEFAULT DING". And there, I think, is the problem. I have nothing on the menu entitled "default ding" or anything like it. It seems that somehow, this option, or rather menu item, is gone. And I sure didn't delete it...

Any idea how I can get it back??

Thanks,
ve6tp

It happens to me few times that I lost sound from my pc. That happened right after software installation or something happened.

If you lose your sound, I suggest your reinstall the drive and install it again from cd-rom or other source, don't use existing sound driver. That sound driver may just be bad

ve6tp, I sent a PM with a list of the .wav files [because it's long]. The files are on the Win98 CD but you may have to extract them individually if System File Checker doesn't fix them.

Hi BertImmenschuh:

Once again, thank you very much for all your help and information. Sending me that long list of files was a lot of work and I appreciatied it so much.

Bert, I remembered that I had the same trouble about a year ago, exact same thing. The problem is that the menu item "Default Sound" is no longer found on the list. So it is not possible to try and assign a sound to it. It's not there so can't be done.

Then I finally found the reply to my old posting that another member of this forum had sent me. His name was Deke and he hit the nail on the head. I did what he suggested and it re-installed the menu item as well as the sound clip, and all worked well againl.

If you would like to see what had to be done, I'd be glad to mail the info to you. It would be the least I could do after all you have done for me. Just let me know.

Thanks again,
ve6tp
