OK...so I have this laptop that I used for work-related stuff. A short while ago I picked up a new one. So the old one I wanted to convert for personal use. I decided to reinstall WinXP Pro on it instead of a manual clean. I figured it would be easier/quicker. I did a "full reinstall" because I wanted to start clean...I got the impression this would perform some kind of format before actually installing.

I was mistaken. After the reinstall, the old user accounts remained. Now as the admin, I can't access certain directories under those accounts. I get an "Access is denied" messagebox. It's a real pain in the **** because there are megabytes of data that I want deleted under those accts. Even Diskeeper can't defrag the files.

Is there anything I can do now to gain access to the offending directories. I've read that deleting the SAM files might do the trick, but I'm wary. I'm even open to someone who could suggest a format utility that I could run prior to a second reinstall.

Thanks in advance - sugo

Okay, so after some more sifting through these forums I learned about "taking ownership" of folders/files. But there's more to it than meets the eye. So here's the MS resolution that helped me:

Sugo, thanks for posting the link.

In future if you want to do a clean re-install you can select the format the partition option during the XP setup. I believe you left the default selection of leave file system as it is and it just installed over the previous version.
