Explorer mishap (WME)

When I open Windows Explorer, normally I get a two pane window with the root drive list and desktop folders viewed in the left pane and the contents of whatever folder I choose displayed in the right pane. Now my problem. When I open Explorer the left pane is dark grey with nothing in it. The right pane has my drive list. I can click the history button on the tool bar and the history list will appear in the left pane. But when I click the folders button on the tool bar the history list stays there. Whats up with my explore?

Anyone know if there is a way to repair Win Exp without reinstalling the OS? On boot the other day this happened and I wonder if this is what corrupted explorer.
