WinNT Max Registry size limit

I was installing a new app on some workstations today, and several of them reported that the 'registry allocated size' was nearing max.

OK, no big deal, I just went My Computer >Properties >Performance TAB >...

But why have a max limit? I don't understand this?

Any ideas?
