I'm new to this, and am questioning the need to back up the registry when Windows 98 backs up the registry every time you log off. Any help would be appreciated

Frankly, I've never made a registry backup, and have relied on Windows to do that for me. I guess you have to question if there would ever be a situation where you did something to the registry, like add software, and then screwed something up. On reboot, Win would restore the last backup, which obviously wouldn't hold the reg keys needed for that installation made before the reg screwup.
So, I suppose what I'm saying is, if you want to change the registry in some fashion (by tweaking it, not by installing a new program), by all means, back it up. Frankly, I've never done it--my motto with the registry is think twice, push the enter key once...

No need to backup when you log off,
Scanreg backs it up once a day.

In fact, Windows doesn't back it up when you log off, it backs it up the first time each day you log on, which is an argument for rebooting once a day.

It depends on what you're doing. If you're modifying/experimenting/troubleshooting, sometimes its best to backup the registry when everthing is working correctly. Instead of going back 12 steps you can go back and remodify the last fatal step. Windows 98 is much easier to backup than 95.
