I work with MS Windows 2000. When I open any word / excel file it takes EONS for the system to open it. When I'm surfing the web and the particular page I'm at produces a pop-up it takes EONS for the pop-up to appear and therefore for my web surfing to continue. It takes a long time too to open IExplorer.
My machine was formatted just a couple of months ago. Everything was reinstalled. I have 256 Mb of RAM. I don't know what to do!

any ideas would be greatlt appreciated!

otherthings that make it slow

size of disk, how much disk space u got left in the partition where win2k is installed. Too little causes problems.

size of pagefile - have you set it to auto resize when necessary

just scandisk your harddisk again, just in case there are errors

SIZE OF DISK - I have two partitions:
c: 20 % free
d: 52 % free

page file - W2K does not support auto-size. I set it to the recommended by Windows

I'll try scandisk too.

thanks a lot.

Rsingr,

thanks a lot!
I don't remember having installed those patches, though.

Should I be able to find them in 'Add / Remove Programs'?

Thanks!

Have you checked Task manager -processes?
(Try to end as much processes as possible)
what version of OFFICE do you use?
Try to start the Computer in safe mode, does the progs(word). run faster in safe mode?

If they do, the problem is likly related to services and progs. that load when you boot the Computer.

If you want to configure what services and progs. that run at startup. Download msconfig from the web.

thCA,
I appreciate your ideas.
I didn't try the safe mode. As a matter of fact I was SO desperate that I ended up formatting the PC. Now everything works fine, but I still don't know what the problem was!

Q329170 is definitely a factor. I had this problem in Win2K some time ago and deleting Q329170 hotfix from Add/Remove Programs cured the problem.

Obviously, if you re-format the hard disk but don't reinstall that hotfix, everything'll be okay.
