View Full Version : Cannot see cdrom or cdrw (W2K)

I've had problems using easy cd creator - was not able to even format a blank disc for 'drag & drop' - kept getting message,
"Device is reserved by other process. Drive reported an unknown error.
You will not be able to read or write to the CD through drive letter access"

I eventually uninstalled all my cd software, cdrwin, nero and ecdc - incase any were 'conflicting!!

Now, when I boot up, I see the cd as prim.slave and the plextor as sec.master as it should be - but when in Windows, neither drive is seen.

2 exclamation marks in Dev. Manager

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

I've uninstalled both drives, disconnected the cables, rebooted, reconnected cables, rebooted - but no joy.

I'm at my wits end.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks for the reply Andy,

I found the same link myself last week - too late though!!

I'd read articles re the ASPI layer, and downloaded aspi checking software.
My system was pretty messed up having uninstalled ECDC, CDRWIN and Nero - it's the last time
I try to do someone a favour and copy a karaoke CD!!

I eventually got the two drives running again - but every reboot saw Windows 'detecting new hardware' and demanding to be pointed to the correct drivers.
Win2K is supposed to have the basic drivers for my cdrom and the plextor cdrw - but it couldn't 'see' them anywhere.
I finally decided on a complete format and install - it's a year since my last was done - so that was what I did, having backed up of course!!

Then by chance I came across the article you posted, and thought, what if............?

It certainly sounded like the very article I was seeking.

Thanks again - another lesson learned.
