I have saved to disk direct x 8.1 and I'm ready to install it in w2k pro, what I'm asking here is direct x 8.1 generic, or is there a specific version for w2k pro, I've installed it in w98se, and it words fine, but is it cool to install it on w2k pro as well ? Or do I've to download a version of direct x 8.1 for w2k pro. Thanks

Yes, you MUST install the version that's designed for Win2K Pro. The version for Win98/ME will NOT be the same and may well cause you problems if you install it.

Go to the Microsoft website and search for DirectX. Find the 8.1 version and make sure you download the version called DX81NTeng.exe, which is the English version, designed for NT-based OSs. It's somewhere between 7 and 8MB in size.

I hail from the UK and here you often find DirectX on freebie CDs that come with monthly PC magazines. There, they refer to the latest Win2K version of DirectX as 'DX8.1b for Windows 2000'. But beware, there's also 'DX8.1b for Windows98/ME'.

DX9.0 is now available from Microsoft, I gather, but personally I'd steer clear of that until it's well proven. Bear in mind that not all graphics cards will be able to support DX9.0, anyway. Indeed, the same applies to DX8.1 - it might do no harm to install it but if your card/motherboard doesn't support it, you obviously won't get the benefit.
