DDR400 Memory (WXP-Pro)

I have a MSI KT4 Ultra 6590 MB AMD 2.7 GHZ
It has 512 mb of Samsung DDR400 memory on board. Why cant I put another 512 mb on to bring it up to 1Gb? Please could some one explain to me why they would sell a board that you could not put the full amount of memory on? Thanks in advance!

The specification for the motherboard states that it can support up to 3GB of memory.

Memory Support
Supports six memory banks using three 184-pin DDR SDRAMs (Up to 3GB)

This review implies that it can't support DDR400 and guarantee stability.
